Cocoa, as a significant segment of the overarching agricultural sector, is the chief agricultural export of Ghana and its main cash crop. Its production occurs in the country's forested areas - Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central Region, Eastern Region, Western Region, and Volta, where there is high rainfall.
Also known as the “golden pod”, cocoa is one of Ghana's economic backbones. With an average annual production of 750,000 tones and a 20% global market share, it makes Ghana the world's second largest highest quality cocoa producer.
The cash crop accounts for about 9% of Ghana’s GDP and makes up about one-third of the country’s export revenues, totaling over US$ 1.5 billion.
The Government of Ghana seeks to move up the value chain in the cocoa industry and welcomes viable partnerships with prospective private investors who would like to engage in cocoa processing and chocolate production in Ghana.
