Ghana Glows at ALC Graduation 2023

28th February, 2023 - Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie participates in the African Leadership College (ALC)/Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) graduation ceremony held at the Trianon Convention Centre, with graduands drawn from over 40 African countries. Two Ghanaian students – Ms. Jasmine AWUAH and Ms. Amy OKLETEY – graduated with distinction in the Bachelor degrees category, with Ms. Awuah winning dual awards for Best Student and Best Dissertation in Business Management, while Ms. Okletey took the Best Student in Social Sciences award.

Heritage Golf World Cup tournament

5th July, 2022, Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie provides moral support to Ghana/Africa’s representatives at the Heritage Golf World Cup tournament held in Mauritius. Ghana came seventh (7th) out of the twenty-nine (29) participating countries.

22nd African Senior Athletics Championships

11th June 2022, Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie with Ghana’s team to the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships (COCAAS 22) held at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex, Mauritius, which had 41 African countries participating. Miss Rose Yeboah won the gold medal in the women’s high jump event.

Excellence Award

Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie presents an Excellence Award for 2022 to a Ghanaian graduating student Mr. Rees-Howells in recognition of his distinguished completion of Bachelor of Arts Degree – with First Class (Hons.) in Business Management at the African Leadership College, in Pamplemousses, Mauritius. The award was instituted in 2020 to inspire to quest for excellence, especially among the youth.

Ghana elected to the United Nations Security Council

Ghana has been elected to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2022-2023 period. Ghana’s candidature, which was endorsed by the Africa Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), secured the most votes (i.e. 185) at the UN General Assembly, with Gabon (183 votes), Brazil (181 votes), UAE (179 votes) and Albania (175) being elected alongside for the duration

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFA&RI) of Ghana issued a related Press Release conveying its gratitude to the UN Member States and reiterating the country’s vision for its tenure on that august UN body tasked with maintaining global peace and security.

Africa Day Observation

Oil Spill Cleaning

Staff of the Consulate-General of Ghana and the diplomatic community joined hands in solidarity with Mauritius, to clean up the oil spill disaster on some of the beaches in the wake of the grounding of the Wakashio shipping vessel on a coastal reef in Mauritian waters.

Deliberations centred on enhancing economic relations between Ghana and Mauritius through the mechanism of the MCCI and the facilitating presence of the Consulate-General.

26th Annual Commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide (Kwibuka)

Ghana participated in the 26th Annual Commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide (Kwibuka) on the theme “Remember-Unite-Renew”, organised by the Rwandan Community and Friends of Rwanda in Mauritius. Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie is pictured here with the UN Resident Coordinator Mrs. Christine Umutoni, who is also Rwandese.

Ghana’s remarkable role in peacemaking during those dark days through the positive human solidarity that it showed with Rwanda, has come to undergird their bilateral relations over the years. While the world dithered on its moral “responsibility to protect”during the genocide, a contingent of 400 troops from Ghana conscientiously ignored instructions from the UN Security Council to withdraw from that dire theatre of conflict, and stayed with the beleaguered UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) throughout the period. Although inadequately equipped and often outnumbered, Ghanaian troops guarded refugees, calmed down genocidal militiamen and did their best to provide security for civilians fleeing the 100 days of carnage that had engulfed Rwanda 26 years ago. Five (5) Ghanaian soldiers were killed or wounded, but by standing their ground the contingent is thought to have helped to save about 30,000 lives.

The Mission participated in the graduation of 105 students at the African Leadership College (ALC). The CEO and founder of ALC is Mr. Fred Swaniker, a Ghanaian. Consul-General Dr. Robert Afriyie is pictured with some of the Ghanaian graduates at the event.

ALC Visit

Successful Ghanaian African Leadership College (ALC) “Honours” graduates visited the Chancery of the Mission, and were awarded the maiden “Ghanaian Spirit of Learning” recognition certificates by the Consul-General, Dr. Robert Afriyie.
